Temporary solid gate, double-leaf (large)

The temporary solid double-leaf gate, 5800 mm wide, is the access point for plant that will not fit through a standard gate.

A clear opening of 5800 × 2000 mm gives 1.2 metres more than the smaller version. That difference decides access for oversized vehicles, mobile cranes, trailers carrying precast units and plant whose driver has no room to correct line within the gateway.

When 4.6 metres is not enough

Gate width is set by the vehicle's turning radius on entry, not by its own width. A vehicle approaching square to the hoarding line needs far less room than one that must turn off the street immediately before the gate. On access from a narrow approach road, a wider gate is often the only way to avoid clipping the posts.

A larger leaf demands more of the structure

A leaf 2.9 m wide transfers a markedly greater moment into the hinge and post than a 2.3 m leaf — from its own weight and from wind pressure alike. Gate posts need firmer anchoring here, and for longer stays it is worth considering concreting them in rather than using ballast feet.
